Not Far From the Madding Crowd: Toddler Tribulation
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2015/05/toddler-tribulation.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Sunday, 17 May 2015. A little snapshot of what life is like in our house if the Coco Pops run out:. It doesn't make for a great start to the day. And no, Rice Krispies with cocoa sprinkled on top does not make an effective substitute. Note to self: Keep all breakfast cereal topped up. Currently reading: Chop Chop. Not Far From the Madding Crowd: February 2015
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Tuesday, 17 February 2015. When we moved in to our house nearly eight years ago, the bathroom was top of the list for things that needed to be done. It was an abomination; there was no way I was going to be able to live with it; and how many years ago was peach 'in' as a bathroom colour anyway? This is my current bathroom:. Which is quite far removed from the bathroom of my dreams (but, sadly, not my finances) that looks a little bit like this:. And, it is half term. B...

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: In the Swim of Things
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2015/06/in-swim-of-things.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Tuesday, 23 June 2015. In the Swim of Things. Eddie has a weekly swimming lesson, and has done since he was about six weeks old. The word 'lesson' here is used in its loosest possible sense, and it's fair to say that he hasn't taken to the water like the proverbial duck. Thursday mornings have the potential to be a very stressful affair. Some of the things that his teacher told him to. But there was a problem. Hearth-father realised that, following Eddie's self-selecte...

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: July 2014
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Sunday, 13 July 2014. The Look That Says It All. Yes So ignore last post entirely. Hospital telephoned on Friday to say that they had looked again at the x-ray and Eddie did in fact have a cracked elbow. So, once again I find myself up for the worst mother award. Poor little mite. Just in time for the summer holiday. Wednesday, 9 July 2014. Hearth-father looks longingly at what is left in his pint glass and decides that it isn't worth the risk with the inevitable drive to ...

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: September 2014
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Sunday, 28 September 2014. No Fight Left Club. So, tantrums, then. They are a bit worse, it seems, when I am single-parenting. Hearth-Father is away in Malta on a cricket tour. With giant shuddering gulps in between. Horrible. It made Eddie Norton's character fighting with himself in Fight Club. Look rational. It's been a long while since we've had one like that. Since he turned three at the weekend, can I blame 'terrible twos'? The 'expert advice' on www.babycenter...

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: April 2015
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Sunday, 26 April 2015. Everything is a battle with Eddie at the moment, but matters of sartorial choice are the worst. He uses strange adjectives to explain why he will not wear a particular pair of trousers. They might, for example, be 'too furry', (though I can confirm, categorically, that he does not own a single pair of fur trousers) 'not bony enough' (likewise) and often complains that the pockets are 'bumpy'. At any given time. We didn't stay for coffee this morning.

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: May 2015
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Friday, 29 May 2015. The summer of festival fun has begun. First stop was the Hay Festival. There's no such thing as fun for all the family," is, I believe, a Jerry Seinfeld quote, and something I have thus far held to be true. We were all exhausted at the end of day one and I spent one of the best nights I've had for months - in the comfort of the yurt's double bed with cosy wood-burner at its foot. Then marshmallows to be toasted around a campfire before bedtime. I have ...

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: June 2014
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Saturday, 28 June 2014. It was a beautiful day last weekend when Gertie made her first Holy Communion. The sun shone down for my little girl's big day. But I am struggling a little this weekend once more. Not over complex theological questions (though she certainly likes to pose those) but over the tooth fairy, and the lengths I am now going to allow the 'magic' to last. What a difference a week makes. Currently reading: Before the Fall. Saturday, 21 June 2014. It was an u...

Not Far From the Madding Crowd: November 2014
http://hearth-mother.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Not Far From the Madding Crowd. Thursday, 6 November 2014. Things That Go Bang In The Night. No blog post in over a month! Bonfire night means that fireworks are out in full force. I'm a big fan of them: I wanted them at my 40th birthday party that never was. Perhaps I'll get them for my 50th. They are stunning, frivolous and fully deserving of the oohs and aahs they provoke. Dark history aside they are reminders of childhood and symbols of celebration. Currently reading: The Luminaries. Lord of the Dance.
